People still regularly believe online transfer rumours, according to a report released today.
The transfer window reopened yesterday, seeing the number of online transfer rumours increase hugely.
According to the study by the Sports Journalists Association, people still willingly believe the rumours despite 99.9% of them being false.
“Everyone knows about click bait, everyone knows that online revenue gets driven by transfer rumours, but they still believe,” said one source. “It’s almost as if people are idiots.”
The study found that people often chose to believe the transfer rumours they wanted to, despite an often overwhelming lack of evidence to support them.
Despite the findings, the study did offer some encouragement. “While there is a lot of drivel out there, there are still publications like Metro and Daily Star providing football fans with informative, worthwhile content.”
