Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has been awarded the freedom of Manchester just hours after signing for Manchester United.
The World Cup winner arrived in Manchester on Sunday for a medical with Louis van Gaal’s side and was informed of the award as he flew into the city.
Fans of the Red Devils got to see the side’s new signing at a ceremony in Manchester city centre, where he was greeted by the interim mayor Tony Lloyd.
“It’s a great honour to sign for Manchester United and to be awarded the freedom of the city is literally very strange,” said the new signing.
Lloyd said that Schweinsteiger was a deserving recipient of the award, saying that the enthusiasm and excitement he has delivered to the city in a short time could not be overestimated.
Schweinsteiger vowed to do his utmost for United and Manchester in a press conference after the ceremony.
“In time I hope to make Manchester United fans happy and in some way justify this bizarre honour that has been bestowed upon me.”
