Saying that it really takes the pressure off for the rest of the year, Everton midfielder Ross Barkley spoke of his delight in getting the one memorable thing he’ll do all season out of the way early this year.
Speaking after yet another underwhelming performance from the Evertonian, Barkley – who started the season in flying form – revealed that he was hugely relieved to get his annual moment of note under his belt so many months ago.
“On a personal note, it’s great,” said the midfielder. “To be able to get that cracker in so early in the season, it gives me a lot more leeway to go missing for a few months. Which is very important as a footballer.”
He added that while it was always nice to score a Premier League goal, scoring such a good one so early in the season really helps.
“Last season I had to wait for a few months to get that one big moment, after which I was able to relax and regress a little bit, which is always nice. This one being so early, it’ll be what people associate with me for a good portion of the season, meaning I don’t really have to do much more for a while.”
Barkley, now in his fourth full season as a senior professional at Everton, added that he still has to pinch himself at the fact that he’s living every boy’s dream of letting the majority of Premier League games pass him by.
