As his club unveiled new signing Mateo Kovacic from Internazionale, Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez expressed his quiet delight at simply being allowed to make a decision at the club.
Kovacic was signed from the Serie A side for €32 million, with his impressive performances against Benitez’ Napoli side last season one of the key factors behind the deal.
Welcoming his new signing to the club, Benitez said that it feels good to be able to have a tangible impact at his workplace.
“After having my suggestions for renovations to my office turned down, and then my idea to add meatloaf to the lunch menu, it just feels nice to have a say,” said the former Liverpool coach.
Some sources have claimed that Benitez was an easy choice as manager for Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who sought a coach who would do little to upset the club’s stars.
But Benitez has rejected these claims, stating that his influence at the club is high.
“Cristiano Ronaldo often says hello to me, and even when he doesn’t, he nearly always looks at me,” he claimed. “Same goes for Sergio Ramos, he once shook my hand.”
“Barely any of the players spit on me anymore,” he added with a smile.
At press time Benitez was said to be encouraged by the response to more recent ideas he’s suggested, with Florentino Perez yet to reject his idea for milk dispensers in every hallway at the Bernabeu.
