Stating that they never let up from the minute he arrived, new Milan loan signing Mario Balotelli has thanked Liverpool fans for their total and utter lack of support from the moment he signed for the club.
Balotelli signed for the Merseyside giants last summer from AC Milan but found chances to play, and score, hard to come by. Rejoining the Italian side this week he stated that even when struggling to gain form, the Reds’ fans were unrelenting and committed in their dissent towards him.
“It was hard sometimes. You don’t play well and it snowballs a little. But I must say the fans stuck at me throughout,” said the forward. “Even when I played slightly well they weren’t nice to me.”
“When they saw me really trying, they seemed to have even more disdain for me,” he added.
Balotelli stated that while sometimes it can be hard to tell how a club’s fans feel about you, the Liverpool fans left him in no doubt whatsoever. “Sometimes it can take fans a little while to get on your back but I have to give it to them. From the moment I walked in there they didn’t give me a chance. They’re truly, truly awful people.”
The fans in Liverpool are different to those in Italy, Balotelli claimed, saying that while Italian fans can be fickle towards him, the Anfield fans were unsupportive regardless of what had happened.
It is something he says he will never forget. “The reputation they have is unfair. They offered me nothing even before I kicked a ball. They were not swayed by performances or hard work. It was a truly remarkable experience.”
Taking final questions from journalists, Balotelli said that his time at Liverpool was a real learning experience and that he’d rather die than return there.
