Praising the Argentine forward’s ability to constantly adapt to obstacles in his way, the Catalan press today lavished Lionel Messi with praise for his “majestic” evasion of the Spanish tax system.
In numerous articles published after the release of the Panama Papers, a series of data leaks detailing offshore financial holdings which allegedly implicate the Barcelona star, Catalan news outlets described the dealings as yet another example of the 28-year-old’s incredible talents.
“Just when you think you have seen all that this remarkable player has to offer, he surprises you yet again,” read a Mundo Deportivo editorial, adding that it was testament to his nuance and imagination that regardless of the measures put in place by Spain’s tax authorities, the forward found a way around them. “How many other professional footballers are as adept at masterfully moving their money around with such ease and grace?”
“Yet again, the old-fashioned and slow Spanish taxation system was no match for the ever-creative and innovative Messi. He is without doubt the greatest evader of taxation we have ever had the honour to watch.”
