Saying that he spotted the Italian’s wealth of talent years ago and had regularly scouted him since, Arsene Wenger today admitted that he tried to sign Claudio Ranieri during the summer.
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, the Frenchman revealed that he was unsuccessful in attempts to bring the former Chelsea manager to the Emirates Stadium with a bid in August 2015.
“I saw how skilled he was when he was with Chelsea a decade ago but the time wasn’t right. We decided to make a bid last summer but, it wasn’t meant to be,” said the 66-year-old manager, adding that if he had his way the Italian coach would have been his first signing during the summer transfer window.
“We tried, we really did. We thought we could get it done but at the end of the day he was not looking to move, so what could we do? He has done very well at Leicester.”
