Chris Smalling has been admitted to a Bali hospital after reading a story linking Louis van Gaal to the vacant England job.
The Manchester United player was reported as having suffered from food poisoning while on holiday on the Indonesian island, though sources have since revealed the defender passed out after reading an article online about his former manager.
“It was too much for him. The thought of having to team up with van Gaal again, I just don’t think he could handle it,” said an unnamed relative of the 26-year-old.
The article, originating from the widely acclaimed Sky Sports sources, caused the defender to have what has been described as a “wartime-like” flashback of the Dutchman’s time at United, which sent him into a wild frenzy before collapsing seconds later.
“Chris’ girlfriend came in a minute later after hearing the commotion and she found him on the floor.”
At press time, family members revealed that while Smalling is now conscious, they remain concerned over his inability to say anything other than “My name’s not Mike”.
