Saying that he was eager to see his star striker return to the form of last season, Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri today revealed that he will allow Jamie Vardy to abuse an Asian person each time he scores a league goal, in a bid to motivate last season’s top scorer.
The reigning champions have endured a difficult start to their title defence, losing heavily away from home on a number of occasions.
Stressing the need to improve quickly, Ranieri admitted that motivating players individually as well as a squad was vital to their chances.
“Jamie has played well but he’s not scoring the goals he was last season. We’ve had a little chat and I told him he can racially abuse any Asian person he wants if he scores a league goal. He was very excited,” said the Italian, adding that he believes the measure will prove fruitful. “If you offer something a man wants. He will work for you.”
In response to the informal agreement, a delighted Vardy was grateful for his manager’s personal approach and understanding.
“It’s nice to have a manager that tries to tap into my passions and allows me to racially abuse people,” said the England international. “Especially when so many would rather stifle it. The gaffer really gets me so I look forward to repaying his faith and, hopefully, racially abusing lots of Asian people.”
