Saying that it may well be the best opportunity he has to announce it without too much attention, Arsene Wenger today admitted that he’s considering sneaking the news of his contract renewal out during what he described as the impending Article 50 “shit storm”.
Speaking from his office in North London, the Frenchman said that the combination of global media attention and widespread anger towards the beginning of the process of Britain’s exit from Europe meant his own news could quite easily be released without anyone noticing.
“I have thought long and hard about the timing of this announcement. At first I was going to come out and release the news immediately, but the more I thought about it the more I realised that I don’t want to deal with all of the crap coming my way,” said Wenger this morning, expressing his hope that members of Arsenal Fan TV and fans of a similar ilk become adequately distracted during the proceedings to not realise anything has happened.
“That’s what I’m hoping for. With all of this happening today, you’d expect fans to be way too concerned with their actual lives to care about my contract. But with these people, you really don’t know.”
Shortly after meeting the press, Wenger was said to have abandoned plans for the announcement after seeing dozens of fans approach the stadium with signs saying “Wengticle 50” and “Wexit”.
