Saying that realistically it was more than he could have asked for, a Newcastle United fan today expressed his gratitude that he was able to enjoy the the club’s promotion untarnished for a whole 24 hours.
Speaking after news emerged that managing director Lee Charnley had been arrested as part of investigations into the club’s transfer dealings, supporter Donald Kyle said that he was appreciative that he was able to go an entire day without having to feel bad about the club.
“As a Newcastle fan you take what you can get. So while this news about Charnley is far from ideal, I’ll always remember that entire scandal-free day we enjoyed after promotion was confirmed with great fondness,” said the 34-year-old bar owner today, adding that the peace and quiet of the last day will provide solace during the likely turbulence of the next 18 months.
“If Charnley is arrested, that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire club is cast into turmoil for the foreseeable future. But no one can take away the brief period of bliss I enjoyed between Monday night and Wednesday morning.”
Kyle went on to say that, if anything, the newly-developing scandal shows that the club is well and truly returning to its previous state as a Premier League club.
