Speaking after Jose Mourinho’s side confirmed they had agreed a deal with Everton for their Belgian striker, Blues fan Damon Broom appeared to forget the last 14 years of his club’s history as he decried the signing as a damning indictment of the modern game.
“He had the choice to come to his former club, to fulfill his destiny, but instead he chose the club with the biggest pockets. Such a disgrace,” said the fan of a team who have consistently outbid other teams in their pursuit of players since being taken over by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
“I wish I could say I’m surprised, but I’m not. This is just the way the game is these days. It’s just a pity that money seems to be the most important thing now.”
Broom later went on to say that if players were going to choose money over a prestigious and traditional club like Chelsea, he’d rather not have them at the club at all.
