It is a debate which has raged on for as long as football has existed, but today it appears that the argument over who the best player of all time actually is has finally been settled after Lionel Messi nutmegged some Venezuelan fella last night.
While Pele and Diego Maradona are considered two of the best players ever, current generation stars Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are widely viewed as the top two best to have played the game.
For years fans and commentators alike have been unable to separate the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars, who at different times in the last decade have guided their respective teams to both domestic and European success.
This neck and neck contest appears to have come to an end however after the Argentine forward stuck the ball between the legs of some unnamed Venezuela player during his country’s 1-1 draw in Buenos Aires.
“For as long as anyone can remember, this has been an argument which has dominated football discourse. Both players possess immaculate skill sets and have influenced their sides to periods of astonishing success, and frankly it was too close to call,” said one journalist in a longform article published today to celebrate Messi’s achievement.
“Ronaldo may be part of the first team to retain the Champions League and one which looks set to dominate for years to come, but Messi has nutmegged some random guy we’ve never heard of. Case closed.”
