Saying that they believe it to be the most appropriate tribute to all those lost in the tragedy, Liverpool today commemorated the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a full-length video of the the club’s Champions League final in Istanbul in 2005.
Speaking at the launch of the video, entitled Lest We Forget – #LFCFamily, a Liverpool spokesman said that he could think of no better way of honouring the deceased of September 11th, 2001 than by showing the Merseyside club’s dramatic victory over AC Milan in full.
“None of us can ever truly forget what happened on the painful day in New York 16 years ago. It will forever be etched into our minds, much like our stunning comeback victory against the mighty AC Milan on the hallowed eve in Turkey,” said the spokesman, before stating that while the attacks left many scarred, the Reds’ unlikely victory over the Italian side less than four years later was no doubt went some way to helping them heal.
“Our hearts and our love will always be with those who perished that day, but we know that – deep down – they will be smiling down at us as they watch the highlights of our defeat of the Serie A giants.”
At press time, the emotional spokesman talked warmly of the resolve shown by residents of New York in the aftermath of the attack, a strength he insists has rarely been seen outside of the Ataturk Stadium on May 25th, 2005.
