Describing it as one of the worst performances by a player during his career at Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has today blamed Luke Shaw for the team’s failure to win against Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon.
Mourinho’s side contested a goalless draw away from home to their bitter rivals, and while the result lifts them to the top of the table, the Portuguese coach was left furious with his reserve left-back’s inability to influence proceedings.
“Yes, Luke didn’t play in this game. But for me that is no excuse. He is a member of this squad and has just as much responsibility as anyone else. There were so many opportunities today for him to make a difference. Unfortunately for us, he was ineffective and didn’t step up and fulfill his role for us today,” said Mourinho, adding that he was particularly angry at Shaw’s lackadaisical contribution during the team’s preparation for the match.
“Luke trained with us all week and had the opportunity to motivate his teammates to win, but he failed to do so. It’s very disappointing and I really hope he has a long, hard look at himself.”
At press time, Mourinho admitted that if Shaw continues to perform poorly he’ll be left with no choice but to drop him the edge of a very high cliff.
